Company History

In 1900, Max and Morris Grabowsky built their first one-ton pickup truck prototype. Then in 1902, they founded the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company in Pontiac, Michigan. The company grew at a steady pace and then in 1909 it was bought by General Motors and formed the basis of the General Motors Truck Company, which came to be known as GMC Truck.

Since GMC Truck gave the world some of its earliest trucks, the company set the standard for these vehicles. In 1912, they released their first mass-produced truck and they manufactured and sold 22,000 of them that year alone. During World War I, GMC Truck produced more than 600,000 trucks for the US military from its three manufacturing plants in Pontiac, MI, Oakland, CA, and Saint Louis, MS.

It was in 1996 when GMC finally dropped the word ‘Truck’ from its name officially. The company now shares a lot of its traits with Chevrolet, another company under the General Motors umbrella. That doesn’t mean that all vehicles produced by these different companies are the same. There are some things that put GMC at the top of the list, such as the Denali trim.
